Since being a tiny tacker, I have always been surrounded by Music in its consumer form.
From being schooled by my older family members on what was – the goods, to my amazing Mother always including the latest “Various Artists” Pop compilation of the day as part of my birthday present each year. Then I started washing neighbors cars to go buy Records and Tapes myself.
Buying LP’s from the local electrical repair store was always a big deal.
Then it was buying 7 and 12 inch singles from the nearest Record Bar because, they had versions on them that were never played on the radio like; instrumentals, remixes and extended mixes, which, I always thought they were way better!
I remember my oldest cousin having the first double tape deck “boom box” I ever saw. It was a big old chunky, silver Panasonic beast.
That day, I learned how we could copy whole or parts of other tapes; enter my extremely rudimentary introduction to “Mixtapes” and the art of “Sampling”.
Still to this day, we call a digital file – a Mixtape… Even when the “Tape” part is no longer present? So it’s kinda stuck as a term. But the funny thing is now… Even if you want to… You can’t buy a blank tape at a local store anymore.
So, here are some digital Mixtapes made by me, for your listening consideration – Disclaimer; Not For Sale. For Promo Use only
The concept behind it – essentially a series of short mix releases (3 x 20min episodes per series). Each comprising of new or established artists, beat makers and their material, either new or slept on, whom continue to push creative boundaries, make good music and command my attention.
Each episode showcases hip-hop, funk and reggae/ragga music that is available now or cuts I’ve pulled from the archive shelves. Each episode is also a shameless plug for here – DamianJohn.com promoting my playlists, Dj’ing and studio projects… S01Ep03 still to come, until then enjoy the first two here. DJ.
